Irish Dairy Board (IDB) today, Wednesday 1 May 2013, announced the establishment of a €2 million emergency fund for its dairy farmers in response to the current fodder crisis. Feed shortages continue to be experienced on Irish farms due to the unprecedented weather conditions prevailing on-farm for almost 12 months. The fund will be distributed immediately through the IDB’s supplier co-op members.
Commenting on the unparalleled fodder and feed shortages, Kevin Lane, CEO, IDB said: “The Irish dairy industry has been hit by an unprecedented crisis and our farmers are experiencing exceptional hardship. It is imperative that we respond where we can to the disastrous situation facing our farmers. We hope this fund can help to alleviate the on-going crisis. We are working very closely with our members to ensure it is allocated as quickly as possible.”
Acknowledging the hard work of all the industry through this difficult time, Vincent Buckley, Chairman, IDB said:
“The board of the IDB recognises the unprecedented crisis being experienced by our farmers due to the fodder and feed shortage. We very much hope that this crisis fund will help to alleviate the intense pressure and hardship being experienced by many. It is imperative that the IDB does all that it can to support Irish dairy farmers at this difficult time.”
